We have been nominated for the Liebster Award, which is an award given to bloggers by other bloggers. Where’s our little statuette? Well, it’s not that kind of award. What we get is that little image at the top of the post, and an opportunity to meet and interact with some other bloggers in our space.
So, how does it work? The blogger who nominates us provides us a list of questions (11 questions in our case). We answer the questions in a blog post (hopefully in some sort of entertaining, informative way — you be the judge). We then tap another few bloggers for the award, and provide them our own questions. In some ways, the Liebster acts as a kind of chain letter (but in a good way!), and can provide newer writers with some extra exposure.
Oh, and like any other award, you thank your nominator! A big thanks to Sarah at the blog A Week at the Beach for nominating us for the Liebster Award! Technically, she nominated Jen, but I jumped on the bandwagon (we share everything!) and tossed my answers in as well. You can see Sarah’s answers from her nomination at her post here.
Sarah’s questions and our responses for the Liebster Award:
1. What and where is your favorite hotel?
Jen: Tough one! The Hilton in Rome comes to mind just because we got an unexpected upgrade to the executive floor. They had a great lounge with free food and drinks and it’s connected directly with the airport. So the next morning we just had to roll our suitcases down a ramp to catch the flight. So sweet!
Sean: I racked up over a million Hilton points when I was traveling for business, and we eat into those when we stay in hotels; we usually try to stay in apartments.
2. Who is your favorite travel companion?
Jen: Hands down — husband! Travel partner for life.
Sean: Jen, of course! (and yes, she is sitting next to me as I write this)
3. What is your favorite mode of transportation?
Jen: While it’s not a lot of fun being squished into the seats for the long haul, I prefer planes for getting a huge change in scenery in a short time. Plus looking out the window never gets old no matter how many times I fly.
Sean: I’d say Tuk-Tuk, but Jen would kill me. First class air! Not that we do the front of the plane that often…
4. What was your first “real” travel adventure?
Jen: I had been to a lot of Island destination when I was younger. I always thought about travel as going somewhere and getting a tan. Then my husband took me on a trip to Paris and Italy. Changed my life.
Sean: As a kid, my whole family would spend a month every summer in Ireland visiting my Mom’s relatives. Middle class kid from Boston staying in thatched roof houses heated by peat fire: it was a huge culture shock, and a huge adventure every time.
5. How many stamps are in your (current) passport?
Jen: Irish passport: 1 US passport: 9
Sean: Only three! I just got a new passport a few months ago…
6. Name one destination you have no interest in visiting.
Jen: At this point there are some places in the middle east where I’d be concerned about safety. Hopefully that will change and I can add those destinations to my list.
Sean: I’m not big on the ice and snow, so I’d probably say Antarctica.
7. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Jen: I’m doing it! Traveling full-time is a pretty good gig. I do hope to get to know other bloggers as we go along. I also expect I will have a very different world view after a few years of travel and I’m looking forward to the journey.
Sean: An astronaut! No, a cowboy! Grow up? Never gonna happen.
8. How many flights have you taken so far this year?
Jen: Since we’re slow travelers we hop from one place to the next about every month.
Sean: The count since January is seven, but we have two in the next two days. And three more booked.
9. What is your favorite piece of luggage?
Jen: Love my 21” Mother Load carry on by eBags. Packs a lot more than you would think, stands up by itself and comes in colors that stand out so that, if I have to check it, I can easily find it at baggage claim.
Sean: Yep, the crazy colored eBag rollers. We had some fun with the story of picking our bags, too.
10. What is one item you never travel without?
Jen: My computer has become a necessity. Amazing that 10 years ago I wouldn’t have imagined bringing it. Life changes.
Sean: Laptop, of course. And, I never thought I’d really say this, but the headlamp really does come in handy.
11. Are you going to TBEX Cancun?!
Jen: We were already booked to go to Europe when the news came out about TBEX Cancun. We are however, all signed up for TBEX Athens!
Sean: We’re actually in Playa Del Carmen south of Cancun for the next month. We already had that planned, so going back for TBEX was out. It’ll be the first time for both of us (both to TBEX and to Athens), and we’re excited.
