When in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico we’re always on the hunt for new restaurants. There are quite a few to choose from but this one sounded different. We decided we needed to give it a try – particularly because of the name: Skinny Bikini Potatoes. If somehow they had found out a way to deliver on their name, we needed to know.
Anyone who is a fan of the humble baked potato is usually really talking about all of the things that you can pile onto it. And this place does just that (so much for the skinny part, ah well).
You can choose anything from basic sour cream and butter, surf and turf, chicken fajita style – on and on. And as it topical in Playa there were also numerous additional topping available in a squeeze bottle, including blue cheese, creamy garlic, chipotle, cilantro and a fiery hot sauce strong enough to bring tears to your eyes.
We went with an arrachera potato – which is a marinated steak along with sauteed peppers and onions with cheddar and sour cream. Enough to keep that bikini put away in the drawer for a long time. But it was fantastic.
This place isn’t exactly off the beaten track. It’s located on 20th street just off 5th Avenue in the tourist zone.
Update: Unfortunately, this restaurant has now closed….ah well.
